So I'm watching ST:TNG and for no apparent reason, it suddenly occurred to me: is there any cross-fandom fanfic out there of Sylar vs. Q? Because frankly, that fight would be EPIC to watch.
In which I attempt to actually meet a goal

I haven't been writing regularly for the last...5 years? 6? Sheesh. And about a year ago, for the first time in my life, I came up with an idea for a novel that included a complete plot and several concepts that really interested my husband. However, in all that time, I've only managed to write about 20 pages of it. I always wind up letting myself get distracted by mundane real-life chores ("You shouldn't sit down and write for 2 hours, you have a sink full of dishes and the leaves need raking!"). So I'm not necessarily hopeful that I'll meet the goal of writing 50,000 words during November, but I am hoping that it'll establish a habit of writing a little every damn day, even if it's only for 20 minutes.
Of course, instead of working on my novel idea, this morning I wrote something based on a weird dream I had recently, where someone finds a little boy who seems happy and healthy but has no idea how he got there or where he lives. They call the authorities to report the lost kid, only to discover that over the last 48 hours, all over the country, hundreds of identical-looking little boys with the same name and same lack of background have been discovered. Two of these Good Samaritans who live close to each other decide to meet up to see if maybe bringing together the two boys they found will trigger memories or other clues as to where they came from. But when the two little boys walk into the same room, they explode. I'm...not really sure what happens after that. Maybe I'll find out...

What is up with all the dang spammers?!?
Nov. 5th, 2012 02:17 pmI don't know how this happened, but apparently the spammers have finally discovered my LiveJournal. I just spent 20 minutes locking comments on the random old entries that they're suddenly leaving daily comments on.
I'm scratching my head over their business model. Does it really pay to put links to a website selling Real Ginuien Louis Vuttion Bags on a journal entry that was posted in 2007? Sure, they have automated programs to do it for them, and probably are stealing someone else's bandwidth to do it, so if even 1 in 250,000 entries from 2007 somehow gives them a clickthrough, I guess they'll consider it worth it. But even setting up the automated programs takes some effort that could be better spent, I don't know, shoplifting or something.
I also renewed my extra userpics. Part of me thinks it's silly because I post here...what...every two months, on average? Why am I paying $30 a year to maintain my layout style and userpics for a mostly-dead journal? But I have a lot of good memories, and I miss everyone, and...well...I just hate to completely abandon it all.
I hope everyone is having a decent fall, and no one on the East Coast has been hurt too badly by the superstorm.

Oct. 21st, 2012 12:59 amI really miss fandom. I just haven't been able to get into a fandom, and therefore the fic world, since Heroes collapsed for me. I haven't even logged in at Archive Of Our Own in months. But tonight I decided to go over there just for the heck of it. I discovered that the five fics I've copied over there have several dozen hits each, which make me surprisingly happy. And I discovered something else.
I discovered that someone has written a Doctor Who/'Allo 'Allo crossover fic. And not just any Doctor Who/'Allo 'Allo crossover fic...but a crossover fic containing Sarah Jane and Harry, who are my favorite companions (not to mention, of course, Four).
I should probably be disturbed at how much this 677-word crack!fic amused me, but I don't have time for that, because I need to go re-read Under Arrest a third time. The only way it could be more perfect would be if the author had worked in a reference to The Fallen Madonna With The Big Boobies.

I was never a massive fan of his, though I had several junior high friends who swooned over him (if you didn't know it, he and I are the same age) (yes, we are OLD). I also never had the severe Wesley-hate that a lot of people did. I looked up his blog a couple of years ago from curiosity, and have been a regular reader ever since. His posts range from descriptions of how he and his college-age son brewed homemade beer, to reminiscences about his days on ST:TNG and Stand By Me. Sometimes, they're just little slices of real life that any of us might write, like a paragraph about how happy he is to walk in the rain with his wife.
And sometimes, he gets spam in bad Engrish about improving his erection, and he writes a completely insane dialogue between himself and a Burly Man With A Wilford Brimley Moustache At The Entrance To A Place Where Men Run Wild that illustrates how hard life was back the olden days before Teh Interwebs could help men with things like that. If you click on that link, you will never regret it.
Note: if you enjoy Wil's writing style, you may also enjoy his recaps of TNG. They're very much in a snarky TWoP-style: funny without being vicious, calling out stupid things while also giving credit to the good moments. He also mixes in personal commentary: "My god, a lot of the hate mail I used to get suddenly makes a whole lot of sense. I have never been more grateful that there wasn't liveblogging in 1987 as I am right now." Unfortunately, he only did a handful of them in 2007 and 2008, but they make for a really entertaining evening of reading.

I have a Yahoo email account that is 13 years old. It's my "ordering email"; I use it only for ordering things online, so that if a company sells it to spammers, it doesn't affect my personal email that I use for communicating with friends.
I had to get into it today and noticed an email with the subject "YOUR SINCERE RESPONSE IS NEEDED". Ah, yes, I thought, a Nigerian prince needs me to assist him in transferring money. Then I glanced over at the sender's name, and it was Shiro Nakamura.
So now I'm imagining fan fiction in which Hiro travels to a parallel universe (this one?) and discovers that his counterpart here, Shiro, the only son of Taito Nakamura, rejected his father's attempts to involve him in business, used his honest baby face to help him con people, and now makes a living suckering money with online scams. Shiro, of course, is intrigued to learn he may have the capability to travel through time and space, like his inter-universal twin. Hiro is then faced with the dilemma of whether he should show Shiro the methods by which he trained himself to do this: can he influence Shiro to turn away from his life of crime, or will Shiro turn into a complete monster once he has a way to escape any police force?
In order for readers to tell them apart, Shiro would have a goatee.

Has anyone ever been to Geek.Kon?
Jul. 23rd, 2011 01:14 pmJust doing a quick drive-by post...I know my flist is pretty small, and I don't think any of you live close enough to Madison, Wisconsin to have experienced it, but has anyone gone to Geek.Kon? I stumbled across it while just randomly looking at cons online. I prefer smaller gatherings like this one seems to be. I went to ComicCon once, and I'm glad I got to experience it, but I don't deal well with giant crowds so I'm automatically tense and weird with everyone around me. I prefer the cons that are somewhere between "local" and "regional": sure, they'll never book the stars of the current mega-hit show/movie as guests, but they have lots of panels that are basically just fans initiating discussions with other fans so you've got automatic ice breakers with the people around you, and you don't have to spend 5 hours standing in line to get into the panel you're interested in.
The website for Geek.Kon needs some updating, but I'm intrigued by the guest list and they have panels like "Why did I agree to do this?: LARP Logistics". And it's affordable even with my current budget crunch: $30 for a weekend pass and a room in the Marriott for 4 people for under $100 a night.
The problem is that this is only the con's 5th year and I don't know anyone who's been. So I just wanted to ask: has anyone been to Geek.Kon, or knows anyone who's been, and can pass along anecdotes/opinions?
Also, if anyone is in the Madison area or might think about going to the con, and would like to meet up, let me know. I'll update here as soon as any decisions are made about going.

This is another local rap group (but this is white boy rap! and I promise it's a white boy with actual rapping ability like Eminem, not Vanilla Ice!). I shouldn't joke because Eyedea died last fall from an accidental overdose, so he apparently had demons that he needed to face. But he was close to Slug and the other guys in Atmosphere, so if you liked the Atmosphere song I uploaded last week, you'll likely enjoy this song, about a failing relationship. It's really a rock song with rap lyrics. The joy that the music brings is completely at odd with the lyrics, but the song still makes me want to dance around the room.

jimmiefearsylar 's liking for last week's Atmosphere song. Heiruspecs are...yet another local rap group where I live...but they do awesome things! I repeat: I generally do not like rap, but I enjoy this song! This is a third local group that plays instruments...some of their songs include a trombone...and they write interesting lyrics! Seriously, if you're looking for happy new music, check them out. Unfortunately I could not find lyrics online, but I did find their Wikipedia page, which told me something I didn't know: their name is a deliberate misspelling of 'haruspex', which is a Roman priest trained to divine omens from the entrails of sacrificed sheep. And the album that this song comes from is called 'Antidisestablishmetabolism', which is a play on one of the longest words in standard English. Yet the song also includes advice about not bending over in a prison shower. WHY AREN'T YOU LISTENING TO THIS SONG ALREADY?!?!

OK. So this is the point on Sprockets where we admit that sometimes we listen to music that may be embarrassing. Anyone who paid attention to popular music in the early 90s has heard I'm Too Sexy. What people may not realize is that Right Said Fred put out an entire album. And I bought it. Yes, I bought it. And I fucking enjoyed it. There is a place in this world for good if silly and cheesy pop music, and Right Said Fred lived there happily. This is a genuinely honestly happy pop song about being in love with the perfect person. Even if you were skeptical about listening to the rap songs, check this one out.
TV On The Radio - Wolf Like Me
OK, after the last song, I feel like I need to reclaim my indie cred. If you've never heard of them, let me give you the accurate opening line from their Wikipedia entry: "TV on the Radio is an American indie rock band formed in 2001 in Brooklyn, New York, whose music spans numerous diverse genres, from post-punk to electro and free jazz to soul music." These are guys who make music that appeals to them at the moment, and then record it, and hope that other people enjoy it. I admit that I am hit-and-miss with liking their music, but every few months, I go through a phase of needing to repeatedly listen to this particular song about being a werewolf. I'll be honest: I hate werewolves who are in any way connected with sparkly vampires. But these werewolves are awesome.

Part of why I'm not around LJ much is that this is really a fandom journal, and ever since Heroes imploded, I haven't had a single TV show that I've really been a fan of. Yes - it has seriously been YEARS since I've cared about a series. However I saw a commercial for a new show today that I can't stop thinking about. It's an FX series called Wilfred which stars Elijah Wood, though I didn't recognize him at all now he isn't all Frodo-y. It's based on an Australian series of the same name, about a guy dating a girl with a dog named Wilfred. Everyone else in the world sees a regular dog when they look at Wilfred...but the guy sees another guy in a dog costume, who talks and behaves just like a person.
I cannot stop thinking about this show. IFC must have aired the original at some point, because you can watch full episodes of it here. I'm sure the American version will be much sanitized; the first episode has an uncomfortable edge and the first two minutes involve Wilfred offering to share his bong. However, Jason Gann, who created, wrote and played the title character in the original, is also starring as Wilfred in the American version and has written at least one episode. And the Australian producers are involved along with David Zuckerman, who was with Family Guy and King Of The Hill, which I both like, so there's a chance it will wind up being different but good. So I'm happy to have something to actually look forward to watching!

OK, I have once again gone AWOL, for months. And I realize that makes my "Good Day Meme" stuff a little irrelevant, but I'm currently using alcohol as an analgesic for a TMJ attack, so I scorn irrelevancy. Hopefully at some point soon I will make an actual post. But I have just watched a music video that may possibly even surpass the video for the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" in awesome awesomeness. And I must share it.
I am not a fan of Bruno Mars. But he has made an "alternate version" video for his song "The Lazy Song". Or, more accurately, Leonard Nimoy has made an alternate version video of said song. It is one of the most awesome things I have ever seen, and has re-confirmed for me that Leonard Nimoy is one of the few celebrities/actors that I wish I could be friends with. This video even surpasses Betty White's recent work in its level of awesomacity and makes Nimoy one of the coolest (and foulest) octogenarians around. And so I must share it with you.
Every day for 30 days, people should post one thing about their day that was good. No bad things should be mentioned in the vicinity of the meme. Even if your day was rubbish and all you've got is "I saw a pretty flower on my way home," then you still post about it in all of its pretty flower glory and forget the rest.
OK, I have once again gone AWOL, for months. And I realize that makes my "Good Day Meme" stuff a little irrelevant, but I'm currently using alcohol as an analgesic for a TMJ attack, so I scorn irrelevancy. Hopefully at some point soon I will make an actual post. But I have just watched a music video that may possibly even surpass the video for the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage" in awesome awesomeness. And I must share it.
I am not a fan of Bruno Mars. But he has made an "alternate version" video for his song "The Lazy Song". Or, more accurately, Leonard Nimoy has made an alternate version video of said song. It is one of the most awesome things I have ever seen, and has re-confirmed for me that Leonard Nimoy is one of the few celebrities/actors that I wish I could be friends with. This video even surpasses Betty White's recent work in its level of awesomacity and makes Nimoy one of the coolest (and foulest) octogenarians around. And so I must share it with you.
I miss being in a fandom.
Dec. 17th, 2010 11:12 pmPart of the reason why I'm never around online any more is that I just don't have any shows that I'm into right now. I mean, NOTHING. Except, possibly, for Dr. G: Medical Examiner, and if that has a fandom I really don't want to be part of it, and I suspect it will disappear once Discovery Health channel becomes OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network (please excuse me while I fucking barf).
I've tried to watch a couple of shows but I just can't seem to connect with anything. Except...I'm starting to get interested in Portlandia. It's a sketch comedy series starring Fred Armisen from SNL and Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney. And I'm getting interested despite the fact that IFC is advertising it ad nauseum, which usually turns me against things. And, of course, there are only about 7 people in the entire U.S. who watch IFC, which means I won't be able to actually talk to anyone about it. But...I'm getting interested in it.
So, you know...that's something.

I am not ashamed to admit that a lot of the outfits I wore in the 90s looked like the one that Carrie wears in the last scene (and, frankly, if I ever lose weight, I'll probably start dressing like that again, no matter how inappropriately old I am).

Well, once again I have managed to not post anything in forever. I kept meaning to answer the comments that people left on my last post, but time just gets away from me. Work is overloaded (which is far far better than being unemployed!) but I've been put on a project that I came to haaaaaate, which meant I'm not very productive because my brain wanted to run away, which has led to a lot of days of sitting in front of the work computer from 8 am to 11 pm in order to get 5 or 6 hours of work done. Finally finished the project yesterday, and I'm hoping that now I can start catching up on other things. Unfortunately, the first thing I have to catch up on, is other work duties that are overdue...
I also went out last night to celebrate 2 birthdays, and had 4 glasses of wine over the course of the evening/night. And today, I'm hungover. Not killing me, just feeling crappy enough that I want to lie on the couch and not think. AND I NEVER EVEN ACTUALLY GOT DRUNK. Getting older is so unfun. Five years ago, I could have drunk a bottle and a half of wine and bounced out of bed in the morning. Blech, blech, blech. So today, I'm whiny and frustrated because I had lots of things I wanted to accomplish, but it's increasingly looking like nothing will get done. The underwear may have to continue to lie on the floor next to the cat fur, and the weeds may continue to bask in the corners of the yard. Oh well.

May. 1st, 2010 11:01 amSince I'm online right now, I thought I'd share this website. A few months ago, I wanted to get some Joel MST3K episodes that have never been released on DVD. I decided to order from CheesyFlix.com. I was slightly nervous because the site also goes by the slightly different name of Cheepnis.com, and when you go to it, the actual URL is www.cupandblade.com. However, the site was well-maintained and had updates going back years, so I decided to take a chance.
The 10 MST3K episodes we bought are in pretty good condition with decent menus, and we haven't had any problems playing them in our DVD players. They're all transfers from tapes that are several years old, so there are occasional moments where there's a glitch, but it's never bad enough to be irritating. CheesyFlix keeps it cheap by not including any artwork, but we paid a little extra to get labeling printed on the DVDs, and it's quite well done and looks professional. The site also sells a DVD of covers, if you want to buy cases and print covers to make the DVDs look pretty on your shelf. They've gone to the trouble of finding actual promo posters from the films' original releases to use on the labels and covers, which is hilariously great.
The DVDs are $6 each, but the site gives discounts for purchasing 10 or more, and if you create an account, they give additional discounts when your total purchases hit certain dollar amounts. They also sell cheesy non-MiSTied movies, and old radio shows, if those interest you. And they offer free shipping on U.S. orders over $40.
So if you, like me, have a desperate need to own a copy of Agent Double 007, a.k.a. Operation Kid Brother, starring Neil Connery, I highly recommend checking them out.

I hope everyone is doing well. I'm just...well, I feel like I need to make this an almost-goodbye post or something, in case there comes a point where I just don't come back to LJ any more. It's not that anything bad is going on - quite the contrary. Real life is very happy for me. The problem is, it's also busy. We've spent the last few months renovating the kitchen ourselves, my work is busy, gardening season is about to start, and we're talking about having a baby. That just doesn't leave a lot of time for online life. I lurk every few weeks and catch up on what people have been doing, but that's it.
Plus, the thing that drove me to get involved with online life was fandom...and I don't have a single show that I'm into right at the moment. The only show I actively seek out right now is Dr. G Medical Examiner and if there's a fandom for that, I DON'T WANT TO KNOW. JESUS I DON'T WANT TO KNOW. So it's like, what am I going to do, come to LJ and bore everyone with descriptions of how I came to choose Garden Club Green as the paint color that best matched the new glass tile? I keep wanting to have more of an online life, maybe reviewing TV shows for my own enjoyment or something. But something else always seems to take up my time.
Anyway. If there ever does come a point where I just fade away, I wanted to leave this post as a note that everything in real life is fine. I miss you all, but right at this moment, I don't have anything driving me to be online.
